THE LEGACY OF AHMAD IBN MAJID & THE SHIPWRIGHTS OF SUR
Long before modern nautical instruments existed, Omani navigators were celebrated across the globe. Legendary 15th-century navigator Ahmad ibn Majid—known as the Lion of the Sea—authored the definitive navigational treatises that unlocked the Indian Ocean for world exploration.
In the coastal city of Sur, generations of master shipwrights hand-crafted the magnificent wooden dhows (Ghanjah and Boum) that carried frankincense, spices, and silk across continents. This sacred bond with the ocean is not just history in Oman—it is a living cultural heritage that informs every modern regatta hosted in the Sultanate today.

Commanded by senior naval officers of the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), RNOV Shabab Oman II is the Sultanate’s glorious floating ambassador. Spanning 87 meters with towering 50-meter steel masts and 2,600 square meters of billowing white sails, she represents the pinnacle of traditional tall ship seamanship:
