History & Foundational Genesis

As Oman embarked on a strategic drive to develop its tourism potential in the early 2000s, the government recognized that tourism had to be managed with careful cultural sensitivity. Unlike neighboring regional hubs that favored ultra-modern skyscrapers and artificial entertainment complexes, Oman possessed a rich heritage of mountain fortresses, dramatic canyons, and ancient frankincense history.

In 2005, the government established OMRAN Group (Oman Tourism Development Company S.A.O.C.) under the Oman Investment Authority (OIA). OMRAN’s mandate was clear: act as the master planner, asset developer, and investment engine for the nation's tourism sector. Over the past two decades, OMRAN has transitioned from developing individual hotel properties into executing massive mixed-use urban regeneration masterplans and establishing joint ventures with the world’s leading luxury hospitality operators.

Operational Footprint & What OMRAN Does

OMRAN Group operates across three transformative pillars:

  • Nation-Shaping Masterplans: Master developing Madinat Al Irfan as Muscat's modern downtown core (centered around the state-of-the-art Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre - OCEC), regenerating the historic Port Sultan Qaboos Waterfront in Muttrah into an international mega-yacht hub, and co-developing Yiti Sustainable City as a net-zero coastal eco-community.

  • Ultra-Luxury Hospitality Portfolio: Partnering with iconic luxury operators—including Alila Jabal Akhdar (perched 2,000m above sea level in the Al Hajar Mountains), Jumeirah Muscat Bay (Bandar Jissah), W Muscat (Shatti Al Qurum), and Alila Hinu Bay (Mirbat, Dhofar)—alongside homegrown hotel brands like Atana Hotels in Musandam and Salalah.

  • Heritage Tourism & In-Country Value (ICV): Managing historic forts, visitor centers (such as Nizwa Fort), and UNESCO sites, while contracting local Omani craftsmen, farmers, and certified guides across resort operations.

‍ ‍Top Strategic Priorities

  • Sustainable Eco-Tourism Leadership: Ensuring all new developments achieve LEED or Green Key international certification with zero single-use plastics and wildlife protection protocols.

  • Domestic Destination Marketing: Partnering with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to drive year-round domestic and international visitor arrivals.

  • Attracting Private Foreign Capital: Structuring co-investment joint ventures with premier international hotel developers and private equity funds.

Alignment with Oman Vision 2040

Under the National Tourism Strategy, tourism is targeted to contribute over 6% to national GDP, driving tens of thousands of sustainable jobs and diversifying the economy away from oil. OMRAN Group serves as the primary operational vehicle to:

  • Position Oman as a premier global destination for high-value cultural, eco, and adventure tourism.

  • Protect and monetize historical monuments and natural sanctuaries without environmental degradation.

  • Stimulate local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the hospitality supply chain.
