OMAN VISION 2040
About Oman’s past and future
History
Oman's history spans over 100,000 years, marked by trade in copper and frankincense, with ancient civilizations like the Umm An Nar culture developing around 2000 BC.
It became the oldest independent state in the Arab world after adopting Islam in the 7th century, establishing an Ibadhi imamate, and repelling the Portuguese in the 17th century to become a maritime empire that extended as far as Zanzibar.
The Al Bu Said dynasty, which has ruled since 1744, faced growing British influence in the 19th century and internal conflict in the 20th.
A period of modernization began in 1970 under H. M. Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
